Synopsis:

Two friends, Norimichi (Masaki Suda) and Yūsuke (Mamoru Miyano) are confounded by a pair of mysteries. The first, whether fireworks are flat or round when they explode and the second, their growing feelings towards female friend Nazuna (Suzu Hirose).
Unbeknownst to the others, Nazuna’s parents are amidst a divorce that threatens to take her away after summer break, but when the boys compete in a swimming race, she hatches a plan - to run away and elope with the winner!

In this story of summer, the season of youthful discovery, can these three find the answers both their heads and hearts seek?

We like it because:

The summer holidays are always the perfect setting for coming-of-age tales and the first sparks of romance, with the creative team at SHAFT wonderfully tying together parallel narratives to create anime’s answer to an adolescent “Stand By Me”.

With striking visuals, compelling characters and a simply phenomenal soundtrack from Satoru Kōsaki (“The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya”), “Fireworks” is a stunning testament to the admiration SHAFT has garnered worldwide.
With her alluring presence, Nazuna (voiced by Suzu Hirose) is not only a powerful focal point of the film, but an evocative reminder of treasured first crushes and and the charming naiveté of youth.

Adapted from a 1993 Japanese TV movie of the same name, critics in Japan such as film writer Tatsuya Masutō were quick to declare its superiority over the earlier original, calling Takeuchi’s anime film more than just a remake.
