Fast sell:

A surreal love story from the artisan behind the influential “MIND GAME” and Annecy winner “Lu over the Wall”, “Night is Short, Walk On Girl” is a provoking Picasso painting on the timelessness of youth and a triumphant testimony to the creative vibrancy and endless liberation to imagination that animation can provide.

Synopsis:

Gracefully yet violently, The Girl with Black Hair (Kana Hanazawa) swirls through the abstract Kyoto night a joyful tempest. Blowing through pub crawls, festivals and book fairs, her youthful glee infects parties of increasingly eccentric characters, but amongst the debtors, existentialists and the God of the Old Book Market, can she be convinced “coincidental” encounters are fate and will she notice the Senpai (Gen Hoshino) in pursuit of her love?

Whether the hands on your clock move fast or slow, Night is Short, Walk On Girl.

We like it because:

“Night is Short, Walk On Girl” is a delightful return for Masaaki Yuasa, adapting another novel from “The Tatami Galaxy” author Tomihiko Morimi, with many alumni filling the creative ranks. Whilst a standalone work, fans of the award-winning 2010 series are sure to appreciate the little nods peppered throughout - which don’t come at the expense of Yuasa newcomers, allowing everyone to feel confident in receiving the full film experience.

With his uniquely fluid and vibrant animation, Masaaki Yuasa’s first theatrical feature in fourteen years is a wild tour de force reinforcing his status as a master of animation, whilst his thoughtful sculpting of The Girl with Black Hair and her nature-like presence would have risked crumbling apart in the hands of a lesser-skilled writer.
