Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale) proves once again that he’s one of Europe’s top on-screen talents, playing one of two brothers who travel to a remote island to find the strange truth about their family. From the mind of celebrated Danish filmmaker Anders Thomas Jensen (The Green Butchers), this dark comedy is hilarious but often bizarre, packed with razor- sharp dialogue and oddball characters – all brought to life by a stellar cast of character actors, recognisable from hit Scandi television shows. A success on its U.S. release and number one hit in Denmark, Men & Chicken is the most unique and disturbing comedy you’ll see this year.

Synopsis:

When brothers Elias (Mads Mikkelsen) and Gabriel (David Dencik) discover they are in fact adopted, they travel to a remote island to meet their biological father and brothers for the first time.

While Gabriel tries to civilise the family of outcasts, Elias finds he fits right in with them. But they soon realise there’s something strange about the brothers – not to mention a mystery surrounding the identities of their mothers and their father’s unusual scientific experiments.

Could it be their father was keeping a bizarre secret? Is there more to the brothers than they know themselves? And how is it all be connected to the strange animals that also live on the island?

We like it because:

As with other acclaimed films from Anders Thomas Jensen, there’s something dark, macabre about this story – with a sinister satire lurking beneath the surface, as it tries to discover the difference between man and beast. With an almost fairytale like quality, it’s clear that the men of Men & Chicken inhabit a very strange world indeed, but when the brothers discover more about their past there are bonkers revelations that will leave you both tickled and shocked at the same time.

The film looks incredible, with Jensen using a dilapidated and eye-catching sanitorium as the main location. The result is something that’s genuinely isolating, with beautiful cinematography that perfectly captures the film’s sombre tone.

Led by the ever-brilliant Mads Mikkelsen, there cast are also fantastic – many of whom UK audiences will know from top Scandi television productions such as The Killing, The Bridge and Borgen. Here they deliver incredible comedic performances as a family of misfits and oddballs.

Funny, bizarre, and wonderfully disturbing, Men & Chicken is one of the most unusual comedies you’ll ever see.
