Synopsis:

Trying to deal with his past success, writer’s block, substance abuse, and childhood trauma, author Stephen Elliot (James Franco) takes on a project to write about the bizarre murder trial of Hans Reiser (Christian Slater), who is accused of murdering his wife.

But as the case takes an unexpected turn, Elliot’s father Neil (Ed Harris) resurfaces to challenge his son’s claims about their history, beginning an introspective obsession with truth, deception, and sins of the past.

We like it because:

Few films can boast such an incredible depth of on-screen talent. With its fantastic ensemble of ever-popular Hollywood veterans (James Franco, Ed Harris, and Christian Slater) and some the industry’s most exciting rising talents (Amber Heard, Jim Parrack) True Deception delivers gripping performances across the board.

James Franco is particularly impressive as the narcissistic Elliot, proving once again that he’s one of cinema’s most underrated dramatic actors. Meanwhile, Ed Harris plays against him with a typically powerful and gutsy turn as Elliot’s father.

Director Pamela Romanowsky has also done a fantastic job in her feature debut, crafting a film that’s equally dark and complex as the source book, Stephen Elliot’s acclaimed memoir ‘The Adderall Diaries’.

With its flashbacks and non-linear narrative, True Deception will have you second-guessing Elliot’s story every step of the way and promises to be one of the year’s most psychologically affecting thrillers. Not to be missed.
