After her husband’s passing, Eva (Shirley MacLaine, Terms of Endearment, Downton Abbey) faces life on her own for the very first time. With the threat of moving into a care home on the horizon, Eva can’t help but feel her best days have come and gone.
However when she receives a life insurance cheque mistakenly made out for five million dollars instead of the expected fifty thousand, Eva and her best friend, Maddie (Jessica Lange, Big Fish, The Vow) decide to go wild and jet off on the luxury holiday of a lifetime to sunny Spain. However the mayhem begins when the insurance company realise their error and fly out to hunt down the duo. Will they be able to recover the money before Eva and Maddie spend it all?
Heart-warming and absolutely hilarious, with a star studded cast including Demi Moore and Billy Connolly, embark on the uplifting journey, and discover it’s never too late to find adventure…
We like it because:
It’s not often you get two actors the calibre of Shirley MacLaine and Jessica Lange starring together, and the pair spark off each other here in this cross between Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Shirley Valentine, as two women who get very lucky with an unexpected windfall of cash, which they plan to spend any way they like and to hell with the consequences.
MacLaine, one of Hollywood’s best comedic actresses, who starred in Billy Wilder’s The Apartment and won an Oscar for her role in Terms of Endearment, had such a crazy time making Wild Oats she wrote a book about the experience (Above The Line: My Wild Oats Adventure).
Lange, better known for heavyweight dramatic roles, is an absolute scream as Eva’s best pal who encourages her to take the money and run, saying “You know what your problem is – you’ve never learned how to have fun!”
Set against the beautiful backdrop of the Canary Islands in Spain, with admirable support from the likes of Billy Connolly (as Eva’s unlikely suitor) and Demi Moore, and directed by Hollywood comedy veteran Andy Tennant (Hitch), Wild Oats is a delightful, hilarious and uplifting fish out of water comedy adventure.
