Fast sell:

It’s cowboys vs the wolfman in this bloody horror-western. Re-imaging the werewolf as the Native Americans’ mythical “skinwalker”, the film sees a stagecoach of passengers, gunslingers and outlaws terrorized by the bloodthirsty beast. With a great cast, fun prosthetic effects, it’s a true horror and weird western gem.

Synopsis:

When two Colorado outlaws hold up a stagecoach, the passengers – amongst them the mysterious gunslinger Calhoun (Shaun Dooley) – pray they’ll survive the ordeal and escape.

But they soon realize the real danger is lurking outside – a beast known to the Native Americans as the “skinwalker”, which only appears on the night of a blood red moon to feast on human flesh…

We like it because:

Taking the creature feature to the Old West, Blood Moon puts a new twist on the werewolf legend. And old school horror fans will love the prosthetic effects, which recall creature classics such as An American Werewolf in London and The Howling.

It also brilliantly fuses the horror and western genres. There are guns, guts, and lots of gung-ho energy. It’s a credit to innovative director Jeremy Wooding, who does a brilliant job in creating a tense and claustrophobic atmosphere. It is an origins movie with a potential sequel in development.

There’s talent in front of the camera too, including a host of talented British actors. Genre favourite Shaun Dooley steals the film as the enigmatic Calhoun, while rising star George Blagden delivers a memorable performance as the lawman Jake and the women characters are as tough as any of the men.

Howling good fun!
