Synopsis:

On a desolate stretch of desert highway, weary travelers - two men on the run from their past, a band on their way to the next gig, a man struggling to get home, a brother in search of his long-lost sister and a family on vacation - are forced to confront their worst fears and darkest secrets in a series of five interlocking tales of terror.

We like it because:

Southbound brings together some of the best people working in the horror genre today, with the minds behind the brilliantly terrifying V/H/S outdoing themselves to make it one of the best horror anthologies of recent years.

The truly great thing about Southbound is that each and every single segment is amazing in its own right. Each one belongs to a different horror subgenre and is as gripping as the last, with fantastic performances from each member of the cast, accentuated by astounding, scary visual effects, both CG and physical, that bely the modest budget. This is all underlined by a terrifying score by acclaimed music production and composition duo, The Gifted, which really gets under your skin.

The two common threads - all of the chapters take place on the same stretch of road and each of the characters listens to a radio DJ voiced by genre veteran Larry Fessenden - instill a distinct sense of dread that all is not as it seems and that something incredibly nasty is lurking just below the surface. And it is - but perhaps not in the way you may initially imagine. Until the final reveal shows how and why the characters are connected, you’ll be kept guessing as to what’s really going on.

Meeting rapturous acclaim at Glasgow FrightFest 2016, the film has evoked comparisons with some of the truly great anthology titles of the past such as The Twilight Zone thanks to its creepy premise, otherworldly sense of dread and its neat, twisted conceit.
