HAVE A BLOOD-SUCKING SEPTEMBER
IN SEPTEMBER, ARROW PRESENTS EXTRAORDINARY VAMPIRES, MUTANT MAYHEM, A JAPANESE CRIME CLASSIC, ADAM GREEN SELECTS & MUCH MORE
Not to be missed in September on the expertly curated cult streaming service ARROW - gruesome and disturbing horror in Vampire Clay, gritty Japanese crime drama in The Threat, sci-fi delirium from Álex de la Iglesia, horror directors Adam Green and Ovidio G. Assonitis choose their faves, Jess Franco’s Count Dracula, and more.
In September, exclusively on ARROW in the UK, Vampire Clay, an outrageously entertaining horror film about clay bloodsuckers running amok at an art school. The debut feature film by special effects wizard Sôichi Umezawa, the film that Dread Central calls ‘one bonkers Japanese body horror flick’, is packed with gloriously gory moments and superb practical effects. You haven’t lived until you’ve seen a clay vampire in action!
Also next month, The Threat, a gritty crime drama in the vein of Kurosawa’s High and Low, set against the backdrop of a rapidly modernising Japan that has left many of its citizens behind, starring Rentarō Mikuni (Fugitive from the Past, Vengeance is Mine) and Masumi Harukawa (Intentions of Murder) as a couple whose privileged existence threatens to unravel in a blink of an eye. This little-seen early masterpiece from Kinji Fukasaku, the future director of Battles Without Honour, Humanity and Battle Royale, is presented in a stunning new transfer.
ARROW continues to show the very best in offbeat and original short films, including Connie, written and directed by Cat Davies, and starring Catrin Stewart (Dr Who), who won the Best Actress Award at the Horrorhound Festival, for her role as a struggling stand-up who finds success when she adds a puppet to her routine - but there’s a price to pay. With nods to Ealing horror classic Dead of Night, and Anthony Hopkins chiller Magic, this shivery short has plenty of new tricks up its sleeve. Gottle o’ fear!
Finally in September on ARROW, Spanish director Álex de la Iglesia’s exhilarating debut feature Acción Mutante, a violent sci-fi black comedy. Produced by legendary provocateur Pedro Almodóvar, the film is set in a post-apocalyptic world where attractive people hold all the power and a terrorist group, who see themselves as mutants, take arms to rid the world of their superficial oppressors.
Seasons in September include:
Adam Green Selects, where the acclaimed writer/director/producer/actor behind such titles as Hatchet, Frozen, Digging Up The Marrow and Holliston, highlights some of his personal favourites from the amazing ARROW collection, including The Mutilator, Basket Case and Hellraiser

SEPTEMBER TITLES - IN DEPTH
FROM SEPTEMBER 6: THE THREAT
The Threat is a gritty crime drama in the vein of Kurosawa’s High and Low, set against the backdrop of a rapidly modernising Japan that has left many of its citizens behind.
Misawa (Rentarō Mikuni, Fugitive from the Past, Vengeance is Mine) appears to lead a charmed life, the very model of Japan’s post-war economic miracle. His position as the account manager of a prestigious advertising agency is enough to pay the mortgage on the spacious modern house he shares with his wife (Masumi Harukawa, Intentions of Murder) and their two young boys, kitted out with all the latest mod-cons. Then one day, the fragility of his existence is revealed when two violent jail-breakers turn up on his doorstep seeking refuge and threatening to embroil Misawa in their criminal activities.
FROM SEPTEMBER 13: ONLY YOURSELF TO BLAME
When Mai sends her drunk friend Sian home in a taxi, she finds herself being pursued by a shadowy assailant who is copying her every move. Unable to outrun her stalker, she confronts them to discover something deeply unsettling.
NOSEPICKER
In this slimy ‘tale of the unexpected’, young schoolboy Georgie (Leo Adoteye), bullied for his nasty habit of picking his nose, retreats into himself with macabre results.
VIOLA VS. THE VAMPIRE KING
When her big sister is taken under the spell of the dreaded Vampire King, Viola embarks on a mystical quest for revenge.
CONNIE
Dolly Diggs needs a voice and Connie needs a body, but she's nobody's puppet... Who's the dummy in the dead of night?
FROM SEPTEMBER 20: COUNT DRACULA
This gothic masterpiece from writer/director Jess Franco can now be experienced like never before, from its brilliant performances by Christopher Lee as the Count, Herbert Lom as Van Helsing, Soledad Miranda as Lucy, Maria Rohm as Mina and Klaus Kinski as Renfield to its sumptuously unnerving cinematography and eerie Bruno Nicolai score.
ACCIÓN MUTANTE
Produced by legendary provocateur Pedro Almodóvar, de la Iglesia’s debut feature Acción Mutante (Mutant Action) is a violent sci-fi black comedy set in a post-apocalyptic world where attractive people hold all the power and a terrorist group, who see themselves as mutants, take arms to rid the world of their superficial oppressors.
FROM SEPTEMBER 27: VAMPIRE CLAY
Art so bad it kills!
On a quest to gain a coveted place at one of the prestigious art schools in Japan, a group of students attend prep school in a decrepit rural art studio.
Whilst honing their skills, star student Kaori (Kyoka Takeda) is entrusted with a bundle of discarded art supplies from the studio's mysterious previous owner to work with. However, when Kaori cuts herself on a razor blade buried in one of her projects, the fresh drops of blood awakens an insatiable form of evil hidden within the clay! As the bodycount begins to rise, the students realise these bloodsucking clay-mutations won't go down without a fight!
Directed by Japanese special effects maestro Sôichi Umezawa (Prisoners of the Ghostland, The ABCs of Death 2), Vampire Clay is an off-kilter exercise in Japanese schlock combining stop-motion animation and Cronenbergian body horror with hilarious (and bloody) results!
