Screen Anime: December 2020 - January 2021

SCREEN ANIME EXPLORES ITS BUDDING ARTIST WITH JANUARY LINE-UP

Arthouse biopic “Miss Hokusai” leads anime film festival channel into 2021

With each New Year bringing feelings of new beginnings and vows to explore new talents (at least until we slip just once from our gym routine!), the Screen Anime channel is excited to head into 2021 with a line-up themed around new beginnings, led by Keiichi Hara’s Annecy Award-nominated biopic Miss Hokusai, as well as The Place Promised in Our Early Days, the feature film debut of the now world-famous director Makoto Shinkai, and more!

Joining them later this month are the intense and action-packed thriller Jin-Roh (written by Mamoru Oshii of Ghost in the Shell fame), and the eclectic short-film anthology follow-up Genius Party Beyond. These four great films are also joined by this month’s binge-worthy TV series The Tatami Galaxy, the acclaimed eccentric romantic comedy from Masaaki Yuasa (Night is Short, Walk on Girl).

All titles will be available on Screen Anime from 27 December 2020 until 25 January 2021. The four feature films will be available in both Japanese with English subtitles and an English dub, marking the UK & Ireland debut of Miss Hokusai’s dub. The Tatami Galaxy will be available in Japanese with English subtitles only.

PREMIERE: MISS HOKUSAI (12)
You’ve heard of Katsushika Hokusai, the legendary artist of The Great Wave Off Kanagawa and others, but few are aware of the daughter who assisted him, and remained caught in his shadow - until now. Set in 1814 Edo (Tokyo), this is the story of O-Ei Hokusai, the free-spirited understudy who inherited both her father’s stubbornness and talent, with art so powerful that it leads her to trouble. Annecy Award 2017 nominee for Best Animated Feature—Independent.
Join us on Twitter from 7:30pm on 7th January 2020 as we kick off the new #ScreenAnimeParty season with a Miss Hokusai watch-a-long!

CLASSIC: THE PLACE PROMISED IN OUR EARLY DAYS (12)
Can three school friends keep a promise they made as kids? Hiroyuki, Takuya and Sayuri vowed to build an aircraft and uncover the secrets of an enormous tower that appeared in Hokkaido, but went their separate ways after Sayuri fell ill and moved to Tokyo. Three years later when Hiroyuki and Takuya learn that Sayuri has been in a coma since then - and it might be connected to the tower, can they come together to fulfill the promise made in their early days? The feature length debut of Makoto Shinkai, director of Your Name.

FESTIVAL FAVOURITE: JIN-ROH: THE WOLF BRIGADE (15)
Kazuki Fuse works in a special police unit combatting riots and social disorder in a totalitarian alternate version of 1950s Japan when he witnesses the horrific suicide of a young girl amidst an operation. He’s haunted by what he’s seen, but as he tries to come to terms with the horror, Fuse forms an unlikely friendship with the girl’s sister, that leaves him questioning what’s right or real, and throws him into the middle of a conspiracy where nothing is quite what it seems. From the writer and studio behind Ghost in the Shell.

CURATED: GENIUS PARTY BEYOND (15)
The wacky and wonderful anthology returns with five short films that take us through a child’s vivid dreams about the arrival of a new sibling, alien stuffed animals in a steampunk world, and more by leading animators such as Mahiro Maeda (Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo), Kazuto Nakazawa (Kill Bill: Volume 1), and Studio 4°C co-founder Kōji Morimoto (Akira).

SERIES MARATHON: THE TATAMI GALAXY (TV SERIES - 11 EPISODES. 12)
When a college dropout stops for a late night bite at a mysterious ramen stand, he crosses paths with a self-proclaimed deity of matrimony. This bizarre meeting sends the young man hurtling through a horrifying flashback to his not-so-glorious college days when the influence of a cruel new friend turned him from a hopeless romantic into a mischievous black cupid. From Masaaki Yuasa, director of Night is Short, Walk on Girl and Lu over the Wall.
