ARROW WILL TAKE YOUR SOUL THIS JANUARY

IN JANUARY, ARROW PRESENTS BIZARRE AND BONE-CHILLING COFFIN JOE FILMS, A SEASON OF CULT CLASSICS, DERANGED MAD DOGS & MORE

Key highlights this January on the essential, alternative streaming service ARROW include a season of the extraordinary, mind-bending films from the legendary José Mojica Marins, a new, award-winning Western short, The Stylist’s Brea Grant Selects, the Arrow Podcast, and much more.

In January, ARROW starts 2024 in fine cult film style, presenting the first of two upcoming seasons of films by Brazilian filmmaker José Mojica Marins, who wrote, directed and starred in a series of outrageous movies from 1964 to 2008. Cultural icon, anti-establishment statement, sadistic lord of carnival horror, Marins created Zé do Caixão (Coffin Joe), with his his iconic long fingernails, top hat and cape, who made his screen debut with the first Brazilian-produced horror film, At Midnight I’ll Take Your Soul. Also showing are This Night I’ll Possess Your Corpse, anthology film The Strange World of Coffin Joe, sex, perversion and sadism in The Awakening of the Beast, and The End of Man.

Then there is the new short film They Call It... Red Cemetery, a searing homage to Spaghetti Westerns, written and directed by Francisco Lacerda, purveyor of a new genre of Portuguese cinema, ‘Azorespolitation’.

Also in January Brea Grant, the star of The Stylist and After Midnight and director of 12HR Shift and Torn Hearts, picks her favourite films from the Arrow catalogue. Ringu, The Stylist, and The Leech are just some of her picks, but what else made the cut?

Also not to be missed, The Arrow Video Podcast With Sam And Dan makes its debut on the platform, hosted by Sam Ashurst, the writer and director of 2020 horror A Little More Flesh and its sequel, and Dan Martin, the special effects wizard whose wonderful work has graced such films as Possessor, Infinity Pool and In The Earth. The pair discuss past, present and future Arrow titles, as well as all their favourite rare and obscure movies. With news, exclusives, and special guests, it’s a fantastic listen for film fans and cult collectors.

The first seasons on ARROW of 2024 include Cult Classics, a crash course in the sort of films that have been championed by ARROW for over twenty years. If you haven’t already tasted the divine delights of all things cult, now is your chance to do so - New Year, new you, after all. January 15: Inside the Mind of Coffin Joe: Part One

Cultural icon, anti-establishment statement, sadistic lord of carnival horror! With his iconic long fingernails, top hat and cape, Zé do Caixão (Coffin Joe) was the creation of Brazilian filmmaker José Mojica Marins, who wrote, directed and starred in a series of outrageous movies from 1964 to 2008.

An unholy undertaker in search of the perfect woman to propagate his bloodline, Zé do Caixão made his screen debut with the first Brazilian-produced horror film, At Midnight I’ll Take Your Soul. Three years later, his quest would continue in This Night I’ll Possess Your Corpse, with Zé embarking on an even more brutal campaign of terror, aided and abetted by his hunchbacked assistant.

The Strange World of Coffin Joe, meanwhile, is an anthology of three short horror films featuring a strange dollmaker, a necrophiliac balloon seller with a foot fetish, and a psychotic professor involved in sadistic rituals. Sex, perversion and sadism abound in The Awakening of the Beast as a psychiatrist experiments on four volunteers with Lsd in this surreal examination of 60s drug culture.

Diverging from horror toward satirical black comedy, The End of Man sees a naked stranger emerge from the sea to perform miracles in a nearby town and become a modern messiah whose deeds will affect the whole world.

Newly restored from the best available elements and packed with new and archival extras, Inside the Mind of Coffin Joe is a love letter to one of the great iconoclasts of horror, who forged his films in the face of military dictatorship and religious censorship to become Brazil’s national Boogeyman.

JANUARY TITLES - IN DEPTH

FROM JANUARY 5: THEY CALL IT RED CEMETERY

Among the crosses of an old cemetery, two outlaws have a dispute over honour, companionship and greed.
FROM JANUARY 15: AT MIDNIGHT I'LL TAKE YOUR SOUL

Coffin Joe terrorises a small peasant community in his search for the perfect woman to bear him a child.

THIS NIGHT I'LL POSSESS YOUR CORPSE

Coffin Joe is still looking for the perfect woman to give birth to a son of his, and, cleared of the past crimes in At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul, keeps terrorising the people in his small town with his iconoclast and sadistic practices.

THE STRANGE WORLD OF COFFIN JOE

Coffin Joe presents an anthology film which tells three macabre tales, all delightfully demented, perverted and grotesque.

THE END OF MAN

Stark naked man comes out from the sea and begins to walk the streets, interfering in daily episodes, always in search of justice. He names himself Finis Hominis (The End of Man, in Latin), and soon becomes sort of a modern Messiah, capable of performing miracles. An adulterous woman and a cheated husband are among his most faithful followers, as well as a group of hippies.

THE AWAKENING OF THE BEAST

Psychiatrist experiments LSD on 4 volunteers, to investigate Coffin Joe's influence over them. Each patient presents a different reaction, involving sex, perversion and sadism.
