Synopsis:

During the summer of 1944, as Warsaw continues to suffer heavy losses and the city remains suppressed by the occupying Nazi forces, word is received that the ruthless Red Army is advancing from the East on a mission to obliterate the Nazis and liberate this ancient and proud city.

In response, the Home Army gathers it last troops to launch a desperate underground revolution and distract the Nazis from the coming invasion. As the battle begins, Stefan (Józef Pawlowski), and his rebel brothers-in-arms sacrifice everything to defend their city and country in what could be the final battle for survival.

As the city crumbles and the Home Army forces dwindle, there is nowhere left to hide. With the Red Army yet to arrive and little hope they will make it in time, heavy casualties fill the streets of Warsaw, and the next few days will see whether Poland can recapture its liberty.

Inspired by true events, Warsaw 1944 tells of fear, hope and sacrifice, portraying unlikely heroes prepared to lose everything in order to save their country.

We like it because:

Produced over eight years, Warsaw 1944 is a true passion project for writer-director Jan Komasa – and there’s no mistaking the work and painstaking research that’s gone into the film, making it one of most realistic and historically accurate war films ever produced.

Not only does it faithfully depict the events of the Warsaw uprising, but also its brutality. The battle scenes are filled with bloody violence and ear-shattering explosions, which Komasa directs perfectly to create a highly tense and gripping experience.

There are also incredible performances throughout, creating characters that bring genuine human emotion to the story and make its conflict all the more devastating.

Produced with startling historical accuracy and realism, Warsaw 1944 is a tense and hard-hitting look at the realities of war.
