Ghost In The Shell is director Mamoru Oshii's best known and most highly acclaimed movie - no mean feat considering that Oshii's other works include Patlabor, Urusei Yatsura and The Sky Crawlers. Atsuko Tanaka and Akio Ohtsuka star as the Japanese voices of Motoko and Batou, while Mimi Woods and Richard George do the honours in the English dub.

Set in 2029, Ghost In The Shell follows the adventures of cyborg heroine Motoko Kusanagi and her fellow operatives of Section 9, an elite security agency specialising in counter-terrorism and cybercrime. Assigned to capture a mysterious hacker known as the Puppet Master, who has been taking over the brains of innocent people and using them as his unwitting accomplices, Major Motoko and her squad find themselves enmeshed in a deadly net of hi-tech conspiracy and intrigue.

Acclaimed by Hollywood heavyweights such as Steven Spielberg, James Cameron and the Wachowskis, Ghost In The Shell is THE cyberpunk anime, transporting the viewer to a dazzlingly detailed universe of virtual realities, advanced cybernetics and sentient computers that seems as fresh and futuristic today as it did when the film was released back in 1995. This is sci-fi anime at its very best. Not only does Ghost In The Shell have breathtaking art and animation, not only does it star an iconic protagonist in the über-cool shape of Major Motoko, not only does it plunge us into a neon-wrapped world of cyber cops and net runners, but it also has a brain, with Oshii exploring issues of self-identity, sexuality and what it is to be human. Oh, and there's a spider tank too - that's pretty neat!
