Synopsis:
Chasing Great follows All Black Rugby legend, Richie McCaw, through his final season as he attempts to guide New Zealand to an unprecedented, back-to-back double of World Cup victories.
Woven through that final season, this astonishing documentary film tells the story of Richie’s life. With unique access to Richie and a remarkable family video archive, Chasing Great is the story of how a shy farm boy went on to become one the greatest and most respected Rugby Union players of all time.
It takes the audience inside Richie’s world, that of a dedicated professional sportsman. What emerges is a very personal insight into high level competition, and a psychological profile of the mind of a champion.
We like it because:
Chasing Great doesn’t just tell a remarkable story – like a Hollywood sporting fairytale come to life – it’s also an affecting and brilliantly insightful sports documentary.
With an incredible wealth of footage from both McCaw’s professional and personal life, directors Justin Pemberton and Michelle Walshe succeed in striking a powerful connection with the man behind one of modern sport’s greatest feats.
Packed with incredible rugby action, it delivers all the nail-biting thrills and spills of a great sports movie – with the All Blacks battling their way to becoming the first ever back-to-back World Cup winners – but combined with the footage from McCaw’s childhood and off-the-field moments, the documentary creates an unmatched profile of the commitment, dedication, psychology, and physical excellence that it takes to reach true greatness.
Also exciting is McCaw’s appearance at a one-time-only Q&A session at London’s Picturehouse Central, where he’ll talk about the film and his journey from farm boy to sporting legend.
